Ashoken Farewell

To anyone who has enjoyed a wonderful summer, a warm campfire, the shouts of kids running and playing into the night with fireflies and crickets and a crescent moon hanging in the western sky, jump on the Internet and listen to "Ashokan Farewell" or play the link here.  Some may know if as the famous background music for Ken Burns' now immortal series on the Civil War played on PBS a long time ago.  Others will recognize it as composition for the end of summer and the last night before all go back to the rigors of life and work and regularity.

For the musically inclined, which I am not, it is a waltz in D major penned in the style of a Scottish lament.

So, to all who are leaving the Cape and Islands, the tip of Long Island, the superbly sublime Adirondacks or the breathtaking Finger Lakes and headed home until the next season of summer, I give you a melody of fond memories.
