Odyssey of the Mind

Sitting in a middle school math classroom right now. Why you ask? It's Saturday morning and it's competition day for Odyssey of the Mind. Bright and energetic kids from around the county gather to pit their skills against one another. The stand on teams and, in my judging room, are required to tell a story using some common household props. The key is to be creative. That brings more points to the total effort. It's pretty hard to think up a good story on the fly and to take the baton from a team member and blurt out a follow-on response can cause some angst among these young thinkers.

So far, they've taken it in stride and have kept cool. Without prompting they still manage to string together credible tales. It's unfortunate that a set of sleigh bells are part of the inventory, though. We've heard a Santa relate more often than not. The judges roll their eyes when that happens.

Good to see kids up so early and happy and doing something other than texting for a change.
