Comes word tonight from 2,200 miles away that the state of California is a bit short of cash this fiscal year. A predicted budget deficit of about $9 billion has ballooned into a deficit of $16 billion. Why? Well, Sacramento figured that tax revenues would be a tad bit higher than they were. I guess the suits up in NoCal failed to stop by Bakersfield or Imperial or some of the other agricultural communities with stunningly high unemployment rates. I guess they were too busy feting the coastal elite to notice that ordinary CA was still having a tough time of it.
California is an amazing place but it is so much more than just La Jolla, San Clemente, Newport and Santa Monica. It's Hemet, Moreno Valley, Riverside, Yucca Valley and all the little towns in the Central Valley. It's everything on the OTHER side of the coastal ranges that bakes in the summer sun and produces much of the character and stuff for which the state is famous.
Well, hopefully, the governor, Jerry Brown, can find a way to get the fiscal house in order. If Cali fails, so too will the rest of our great land. Believe it or not, California is one of the world's top ten economies. Its health is important to all of us. From Augusta to Austin and from Florida to Washington State, all depend on the health and vibrancy of the Golden State.
